Agriculture

The New York State Assembly Agriculture Committee focuses on supporting the state’s agricultural industry, ensuring the viability of farms, promoting New York agricultural products, and safeguarding farmland. The committee develops policy and oversees legislation related to food production and safety, farmland protection, agribusiness development, animal welfare, and marketing initiatives. It exists to strengthen the state’s agricultural economy, encourage agricultural research and innovation, and address challenges facing farmers and rural communities.

The Committee has direct responsibility for all legislation and matters related to the agricultural sector. This includes oversight of Agriculture and Markets Law—which covers food safety, dairy and farm product regulation, farm markets, animal disease prevention, and the operation of the Department of Agriculture and Markets—plus areas in the Public Health Law (food safety standards), and Real Property Tax Law (pertaining to agricultural land use and taxation).
