Description

The New York State Assembly Energy Committee is responsible for developing and overseeing legislation and policy affecting the state’s energy systems. The committee’s core focus includes regulating and encouraging utility services, renewable energy programs, climate and decarbonization initiatives, utility rate structures, energy efficiency, energy infrastructure, and the development and deployment of emerging technologies. Its goal is to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable energy for New Yorkers while supporting sustainable, forward-looking solutions for the state’s energy needs.

The Committee’s jurisdiction includes direct oversight of Energy Law (covering public utility regulation and energy planning), Public Service Law (utility operations and consumer protections), General Municipal Law (municipal energy projects), Environmental Conservation Law (clean and renewable energy mandates), and relevant sections of Real Property Law and Tax Law (energy facility siting and financing). It regularly examines legislation addressing energy generation, transmission, conservation, and related regulatory matters.

Assembly Member Didi Barrett currently serves as Chair, with other key leadership including a Ranking Member from the minority party.
