Assembly
The New York State Assembly Governmental Employees Committee is responsible for all legislation and oversight concerning public employees in New York, including matters affecting state and local government workers, pensions, retirement benefits, collective bargaining, and workplace standards. Its core task is to ensure fair and effective employment practices, safeguard retirement and health security, and oversee reforms that strengthen the public workforce. The committee exists to uphold competitive compensation, job protections, and benefits that help New York attract and retain skilled workers in public service.
The Committee has direct oversight of laws such as Civil Service Law (covering employee rights, merit systems, and exams), Retirement and Social Security Law (pensions and retirement benefits for public workers), General Municipal Law (public employee relations), and relevant sections of Education Law (teachers and school employees) and Labor Law (workers’ rights and safety in government employment).
