The New York State Assembly Judiciary Committee is responsible for legislation affecting New York’s courts, judgeships, civil and criminal procedures, and the administration of justice. It handles matters including family law, constitutional amendments, judicial reform, court budgets, and legal ethics. The committee plays a central role in safeguarding due process and upholding the integrity of the state’s legal system.
The Committee’s authority extends over Judiciary Law, Civil Practice Law and Rules (CPLR), Domestic Relations Law, Estates, Powers and Trusts Law, court-specific Unconsolidated Laws, and sections of Penal and Criminal Procedure Law where court jurisdiction is involved.
Assembly Member Charles D. Lavine serves as Chair, with the Ranking Member from the minority party. The Judiciary Committee includes about 20 members and generally meets according to the legislative session calendar.
