Assembly
The New York State Assembly Local Governments Committee reviews and advances legislation impacting city, town, and village governance outside of New York City. Its work includes local home rule, municipal finance, shared services, land use, and intergovernmental relations. The committee exists to strengthen local autonomy, fiscal responsibility, and the effective delivery of services at the municipal level.
The Committee’s legal jurisdiction encompasses General Municipal Law, Town Law, Village Law, County Law, and related sections of Real Property Tax Law affecting local government operations and finance.
Assembly Member Fred W. Thiele Jr. serves as Chair, with a designated Ranking Member from the minority caucus. The Local Governments Committee includes approximately 15 members and meets during the legislative session, with schedule and membership rosters published on the Assembly website.
