Disabilities
Assembly
The New York State Assembly People with Disabilities Committee examines and develops legislation affecting New Yorkers living with physical, cognitive, developmental, or sensory disabilities. The committee’s core focus is advancing access, inclusion, independent living supports, accessibility in housing and transportation, employment opportunities, and protection against discrimination. The committee works to ensure equitable services and rights for people with disabilities across the state.
This Committee oversees laws such as Mental Hygiene Law (disability services and rights), Social Services Law (support programs), Education Law (special education and transition services), Public Health Law (healthcare access), and Civil Rights Law (anti-discrimination protections). It also monitors the work of agencies such as the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.
The committee is typically chaired by a senior member of the Assembly’s majority party, with a Ranking Member from the minority. It includes roughly 13–15 members and meets during the legislative session. Memberships and meeting schedules are current on the Assembly’s site.
