Description

The New York State Senate Children and Families Committee advances legislation and oversight focused on the safety, stability, and wellbeing of New York's children and their families. It develops, reviews, and amends policy concerning child welfare, child abuse and neglect, foster care, adoption, juvenile justice, family support services, and prevention of family violence. The committee’s core mission is to strengthen families, protect vulnerable children, and promote opportunities and support for youth development.

This committee has direct responsibility over Social Services Law (child welfare and public assistance), Family Court Act (family protection, foster care, and child support), sections of Executive Law (oversight of the Office of Children and Family Services), as well as relevant portions of Public Health Law and Education Law.

The committee is chaired by a senior senator from the majority, with a ranking minority member. It generally has about 7–9 members and meets during legislative session weeks, with rosters and schedules maintained on the Senate website.
