Senate
The Senate Codes Committee develops and reviews legislation related to New York’s criminal and civil justice systems, including the Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, firearms regulation, sentencing, and procedural reforms. The committee’s primary focus is maintaining public safety, ensuring due process, and overseeing modernization of justice practices.
Its jurisdiction includes Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Civil Practice Law and Rules, Judiciary Law, and relevant parts of the Executive Law concerning criminal justice or judicial administration.
The committee is chaired by a majority senator, with a ranking minority member. It generally has about 19–21 members and meets during legislative sessions; meeting dates and rosters are posted on the Senate website.
