The Senate Finance Committee is responsible for legislation affecting state fiscal policy, including the executive budget, appropriations, taxation, bond acts, and fiscal oversight of state agencies. Its core work includes reviewing and shaping the state budget, tax policy, economic forecasting, and spending proposals to ensure responsible stewardship of New York’s finances.
The committee oversees Budget Bills, State Finance Law (appropriations, budget implementation), Tax Law (income, sales, and excise taxes), and relevant sections of laws impacting public finance.
Chaired by a majority senator (often a senior leader), with a ranking minority member. The committee includes about 19–21 members and meets frequently during session, especially during the budget process. Current schedules and membership are on the Senate’s website.
