The New York State Senate New York City Education Committee develops and oversees legislation affecting the public schools and educational systems specific to New York City. The committee focuses on issues such as school governance, education funding, curriculum standards, student services, accountability, and the city’s relationship with the State Board of Regents and Department of Education. It exists to ensure New York City’s school system meets the needs of its diverse student population and maintains high educational standards.
Legal oversight includes Education Law (as it pertains to city school districts and governance), sections of General Municipal Law (school finance), and relevant portions of Public Officers Law and State Finance Law affecting New York City schools.
Senator John C. Liu serves as Chair, with Senator Stephen T. Chan as Ranking Member. The committee includes approximately 7–9 senators and meets regularly during the legislative session as scheduled on the Senate website.
