Women's Issues

Senate

Description

The Women’s Issues Committee develops, reviews, and advances legislation focused on improving the rights, opportunities, health, and economic security of women throughout New York State. Its scope includes workplace equality, reproductive health and rights, violence prevention, leadership, and support for women’s health programs and entrepreneurship.

The committee’s purview crosses several laws: Civil Rights Law (anti-discrimination protections), Labor Law (workplace protections), Public Health Law (women’s and reproductive health), Social Services Law (services for women and families), as well as Family Court Act and Domestic Relations Law (family protections).

Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton currently chairs the committee, with a Ranking Member from the minority party. There are generally 7–9 members, and meetings are held throughout session.
