Social Services
Assembly
The New York State Assembly Social Services Committee develops and reviews legislation concerning public assistance, welfare programs, child and family support services, homelessness prevention, and the administration of social services. Its focus is on improving the delivery and effectiveness of programs that serve vulnerable populations, including children, families, seniors, and individuals in need, while ensuring services are provided with dignity and efficiency.
The Committee oversees Social Services Law (public assistance, SNAP, child welfare), portions of Family Court Act (child support and foster care), and relevant sections of Public Health Law, Mental Hygiene Law, and Education Law. It also provides oversight of county and state social services agencies.
Assembly Member Maritza Davila serves as Chair, with a Ranking Member from the minority party. The committee has about 18 members and generally meets during each legislative session. The latest membership lists and schedules are posted on the Assembly’s website.
